<< BackButte College Scholarship Recipient Leo SavageLast year, the Butte College Foundation presented over $300,000 in scholarships to 469 students. One of our best and most outstanding scholarship recipients is Leo Savage. This year, Leo will be receiving two Foundation scholarships: the Anonymous Scholarship and the R. Scott and Cindy Chalmers Scholarship.
Commitment, passion, leadership and scholarship are four main characteristics that describe outstanding Butte College student and Phi Theta Kappa honor society member, Leo Savage. Leo started attending Butte College as a part-time student at age 15. He graduated with Honors from Hearthstone Charter School in 2008. Today, he is a full-time student at Butte College majoring in Chemistry. Leo plans to finish his coursework and graduate from Butte College in May 2011, when he then plans to transfer to CSU, Chico. His career goal is to become a Pharmacist.
Leo Savage is actively engaged in the Butte College Beta Theta Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, having served last year as the Public Relations Coordinator. This year, he served as Vice President of Service and is transitioning to be President of the Butte College Beta Theta Kappa Chapter. He also serves as the North East District Vice-President, of the Nevada/California Region. In March 2010, Leo was elected to be President of the Nevada/California Region for 2010-2011. He was also elected to be President of the Butte College Beta Theta Kappa Chapter for the 2010-2011 year.
Leo clearly demonstrates outstanding leadership abilities that impact fellow students, campus and community partnerships alike. Last year, when the chapter’s Vice-President of Service was unable to continue with the “Relay for Life Project” due to health concerns. Leo stepped in and volunteered to take over coordinating this worthwhile service project.
In 2008, Leo Savage also participated on the planning team for “Make-a-Difference Day”. The chapter, in collaboration with Butte College, hosted an “Extreme Makeovers: Butte-Glenn Edition”. Twenty-three projects were selected and adopted by various campus and community teams. The Butte College Make-a-Difference Day 2008 project received national recognition through USA Weekend, and received one of only ten Newman Foundation Awards. This prestigious award also included a $10,000 cash prize, which was turned into a perpetual scholarship, to be given to students who participate in future Make-a-Difference Day projects.
Leo Savage sets his level of civic responsibility and engagement high, and challenges others to meet higher standards of excellence as well. He was recognized in May 2009 as one of Butte College’s Outstanding Club Member for his meritorious service to the campus and community.
In his numerous leadership roles and dedicated personal commitment to civic engagement, Leo provides positive and long-term benefits to both the college and our local community. He understands the importance of collaborative partnerships to plan and implement projects, document outcomes, and reflect on the impact of service. Leo Savage will continue to serve his community after he transfers from Butte College. He is concerned about his community and the impact a commitment to personal service has on others. His involvement and strong work ethic is outstanding and commendable. Leo Savage represents Butte College as an outstanding scholar, leader, and alumnus, and we are proud that our scholarship program can help him pursue his dreams.
