Melodic strains of a steel drum accompanied by strumming acoustic guitars and happily raised singing voices energized market vendors and customers. A tow headed three year old bounced to the rhythm of a Caribbean beat, intently taking in the upbeat sounds of the “Alice Peake Experience” while trying to balance a lemon ice cone in his right hand provided by Scooter’s Italian Ice. This is just a small sampling of the Road Runner Community Market Place experience.

The Community Market Place (CMP) which opened April 2010 is an ongoing fundraising project to benefit the Butte College Foundation. The CMP is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Butte College Chico Center, located at 2320 Forest Avenue in Chico. The CMP will continue through October, with the possibility of some special holiday market days as well. Proceeds from the CMP will be used to support student scholarships, Butte College programs, and to bring in extra revenue during tight economic times. In addition, the CMP invites participation by other local non-profit organizations to come to the market place, giving those worthy local causes the opportunity for community exposure while raising funds for their programs. An aspiration of the Butte College Foundation directors, the Community Market Place is an expanded format of similar market places being held at many other community colleges across the country.

The Road Runner Community Market Place is not only a “Certified Farmer’s Market”, open to local farmers; but, it also offers food, crafts, art, community service, a “For Sale By Owner” auto alley, as well as informative “Ask the Expert” interactive demonstrations. The CMP is also proud to celebrate local talent by regularly showcasing original artists and live musical entertainment. The CMP invites you to share in this family-friendly celebration!

Market director Debbie LaPlant-Mosely warmly greets and supports vendors, often lending them a hand as they put up a tent or chatting market attendees about their personal experiences at the market. Her infectious smile and “can do” attitude sets a tone and makes the market an inviting, pleasant place to visit with the family or friends on a lazy weekend spent in town.
