<< BackButte College Phi Theta KappaPhi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of the two-year college. There are more than 1200 chapters at community colleges in the United States and abroad. Butte College Beta Theta Kappa currently ranks in the top 100 chapters, based on how well they embody the four hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowships.
At Butte College our members come from many states and countries and have a variety of majors, but they all share a devotion to community and respect for academic excellence. Before induction, each member must possess a 3.5 GPA and have completed 12 transferable units. They pay a one-time fee of $88, which makes them a member for life. Once a member, every Phi Theta Kappan has the right to campaign for Chapter, Regional, and International Office.
Our chapter is very dedicated to Service. Members participate annually in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and National Make a Difference Day. In addition, they also perform many other services such as Campus Clean Up, canned food drives for the Food Pantry on campus, and virtually any other service project they can lay their hands on. Their dedication has taken them to Concow to assist with fire relief, and as far as New Orleans to help rebuild homes destroyed by hurricane Katrina.
Butte College Phi Theta Kappa has just returned from the International Convention in Orlando, Florida. The Convention was held during the week of April 5th, at the Disney Dolphin Hotel Convention Center in Disney World. During the Convention the officer team attended several General Sessions and heard from speakers such as Dr. Rachel Maddow and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. They also attended many Educational Forums with topics ranging from finding scholarships to enhancing the Phi Theta Kappa experience.
In addition, former Regional President Sheila Burson, then chapter Vice President for Scholarship, campaigned for International Vice President for Division IV. While not elected, the experience and the challenges were well worth the effort.
At the Awards Gala, Butte College Phi Theta Kappa was honored with several awards. Mr. Mike Rasmussen, Dean of Special Programs at Butte College, was honored as a Most Distinguished Administrator. Chapter member Tyler Farmer was recognized as a Most Distinguished Chapter Member. The chapter also received the Scholarship Hallmark, was named one of the top 100 chapters internationally, and once again received the Beta Alpha Award for Continued Excellence.
Two officers of Butte College Phi Theta Kappa have also been honored with additional awards and scholarships. Sheila Burson, mentioned above, was named a First Team All California Academic Scholar, and as a Gold Scholar for the Coca-Cola Scholarship challenge. Leo Savage, current Chapter and Regional President, was also named a First Team Scholar for California and was recognized as a Coca-Cola Finalist. Both Sheila and Leo received medallions commemorating their acceptance to the All California Team, and each will be receiving a scholarship ranging from $1000 to $1500 courtesy of the Coca-Cola Foundation.
More recently, Phi Theta Kappa member Gabriel Dietz was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. This prestigious award is highly competitive, and carries high honor as well as $30,000 per year, renewable, for baccalaureate factors. Congratulations Gabriel!
